Google mentoring scheme aims to boost female talent pipeline
The way to ensure gender diversity at the top of business is to build a pipeline of talent from below, rather than parachuting women in at the top, says Google’s diversity head said. The internet firm has completed a programme called ‘Code F’, a mentoring scheme which sees aspiring female software engineers paired with existing Google engineers or senior staff members. The initiative aims to boost the number of female recruits and is part of a wider drive to ensure the firm finds the best talent among diverse and under-represented groups.

BP settles Gulf of Mexico oil spill lawsuit
BP will pay out $7.8 billion (£5 billion) to settle a lawsuit with thousands of individuals from the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, under an agreement reached late on Friday night. The settlement was reached just ahead of Monday’s trial in a New Orleans court. The trial, already delayed by a week to allow extra time for negotiations, has been postponed again. In a statement the oil company said it would use the remainder of the $20 billion compensation fund raised in the summer of 2010 to settle claims with tens of thousands of shrimp boat captains, condo owners and others who suffered losses in the spill.

United States Green Deal-style financing could help yield $1 trillion in energy savings
The United States government has been urged to support new types of financing models that encourage households and businesses to invest in energy efficiency measures, after a new report suggests these measures could yield $1 trillion in energy savings and create millions of jobs.
Deutsche Bank Climate Change Advisors and The Rockefeller Foundation launched the report late last week, and concluded that $279 billion could be invested in retrofitting domestic and commercial buildings, which could yield more than $1 trillion of energy savings over the next decade.

Businesses urge government to re-think Heathrow runway plans
Some 70 business leaders and groups representing hundreds of others have written an open letter to the government demanding the debate about building a third runway at Heathrow airport be re-opened. The letter is signed by large corporations such as Microsoft Corp and Telefonica O2, and puts further pressure on the government to re-think its aviation policy. Heathrow is operating at almost full capacity after the coalition government blocked development of a third runway when it came to power in 2010, and further expansion of the west London site would mean a huge increase in the number of planes flying directly over the capital.
