No can do

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are the best of bad bunch when it comes to recycling beverage containers, a study of 12 US drinks manufacturers suggested.

The Waste and Opportunity: US Beverage Container Scorecard and Report awarded both companies a C, for using 10% recycled content in plastic bottles and for commitments to work with competitors toward setting beverage container recovery goals.

All other companies scored D- or F, with Cadbury Schweppes, Cott and National Beverage performing worst.

Wastewater

Electrical retailer Curry’s is endorsing the launch of the UK’s first water efficiency Marque, to enable its customers to choose more water-efficient products.

The Marque will be awarded annually by Waterwise, a not-for-profit whose mission is to reduce water wastage in Britain. Curry’s will also provide instore information for customers.

Letsrecycle.com has presented a Coca-Cola Enterprises employee with a corporate recycling champion award, for increasing the average amount of waste recycled at the company’s Milton Keynes’ site from 107 tonnes a month to 164 tonnes a month, in the space of six months. J Sainsbury has introduced a new range of recyclable carrier bags in its supermarkets, it announced on September 27. The bags comprise one-third recycled material and will reduce the company’s use of plastic by 6,500 tonnes a year.The move complements the supermarkets plan to cut plastic use by 4000 tonnes a year, by increasing the number of products wrapped in compostable packaging from 30 to 500.
