UK plans to cut jobs
A recent survey by professional consultancy, KPMG, indicates that 53% of senior executives are planning job cuts. According to the National Business Confidence Survey a half of executives plan to implement recruitment freezes. Back in March 2008, when the same organisations were questioned, only 29% were looking at job cuts as a cost-saving measure.

Sickness absence can be reduced
Recent research concluded that majority of workers with health problems can be helped back into employment with simple support. The study “Mental health and employment” was conducted by the Social Policy Research Unit and Institute for Employment Studies on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions. It found that more than 90% people with health problems could be helped to return to work by following a few principles of good healthcare and workplace management. This had the potential of reducing long-term sickness absence and the number of workers going on to long-term incapacity benefit by up to 60%.

Companies value employee engagement
A new research undertaken by Article 13 shows that employee engagement can be used as a tool to increase job satisfaction and employee involvement. The study of 96 companies with proven reputations in corporate responsibility has shown that more highly engaged companies are integrating and embedding personal and corporate values into the wider business strategy. 28% of companies implemented “Ask the CEO or senior management” question forums”. 30 companies reported the creation of employee networks.

Google best place to work
The Great Place to Work Institute named Google the Best Workplace in the UK. In the survey of 1.5 million employees across 4,000 organisations Goggle scored the best, while Asthma UK charity was second. Liane Hornsey, Human Resource director for EMEA Google, said “The cornerstone of what we’re doing at Google that is very different is we put a big emphasis on hiring,”

Social enterprises employ more than a million
3.4% of the working population is employed in social enterprises according to a “Social Entrepreneurship in the UK” survey. The findings are based on 5 year research led by Delta Economics, sustainable economic development think-thank. “Under-represented groups in enterprise, such as women and Bame communities, are more likely to be social entrepreneurs and be innovative in tackling the needs they see in front of them on a daily basis,” said Rebecca Harding, managing director of Delta Economics.
