Charities of the year

HBOS employees have chosen I CAN as its charity of the year partner for 2006, from a shortlist of three charities. Through its Million £ Challenge, a year long programme of fundraising activities by staff, HBOS will give all of the money raised to I CAN, a charity to build children’s communication skills. Photographic retailer Jessops raised £70,340 for its charity of the year, CLIC Sargent, a charity that supports children with cancer. The company’s staff, suppliers and customers raised the money. Contact Jessops www.jessops.com

Betfair, an online sports betting exchange has chosen the Brooke Hospital for Animals as its charity of the year partner. The company will match all funds raised up to £125,000 in a campaign that will also involve its customers and UK racecourses. Contact Betfair www.betfair.com

Relief and reconstruction

GlaxoSmithKline announced on December 21 that it has made a $1m cash donation to the South Asia Earthquake Relief Fund, to help reconstruction and rebuilding efforts following October’s earthquake. Contact GSK www.glaxosmithkline.com

Action against avian flu

Roche, the Swiss pharmaceutical group, has donated 2 million treatments of an anti-retroviral drug to treat avian flu to an Asian stockpile. The action stems from growing concern that a pandemic is likely to begin in South East Asia, where countries have few resources to treat their citizens. Birthday presence

The Lloyds TSB Foundation for Scotland has set up a special award scheme to mark its 21st birthday. The foundation is making grants of £21,000 in 15 parts of Scotland. The foundation made grants worth over a million pounds during 2005, benefiting 116 charities. Caring customers

The Co-operative Bank has donated over £100,000 to five trade justice charities chosen by its customers through its Customers Who Care scheme.
