Appetite for Profit

January 30, 2007

In this call to arms for Americans to face up to obesity epidemic, Simon casts corporations as public enemy number one. She argues that business controls our food choices by using lobbyists to ensure policymakers protect their profits, who is turn emphasise education and personal responsibility as the answer to the nation’s nutritional woes. But taking personal responsibility is an elusive goal, as long as individuals lack access to affordable, healthy food. There may be truth in her statement that “companies cannot maximise profits and benefit public health”, but in the UK it is companies which fail to heed demand for healthier foods that are losing market share.
