Queen’s banker fined for poor money laundering checks
Coutts, banker to the British Queen, has been given the biggest ever fine – £8.75 million – for breaches of money-laundering rules after three years of “serious” and “systemic” problems in handling the affairs of customers vulnerable to corruption because of their political links. The FSA fined Coutts because there was an “unacceptable risk” that the bank could have been handling the proceeds of crime for a three-year period up to November 2010 after failing to deal properly with customers classified as “politically exposed persons”.

The gas leak on a rig operated by the French firm began on Sunday and has formed a cloud dense enough to be seen by workers on other North Sea rigs. Total said it was unable to predict when or how the leak would be contained.
