State of the World 2008

February 11, 2008

With 100 billion dollars invested over the past year in technology development in environmental start-up ventures, this report – the 25th edition – describes the state of the world at a point of significant change. The authors even allude to the notion that we could be experiencing the beginning of a revolution, as the outdated economy of old – with its constant drive for growth and assumed interdependence from the natural world – is replaced by a sustainable, inclusive economy. This economy, the book argues will focus upon development rather than growth and pull the some 40 per cent of the world’s population out of poverty – a task the existing economy has failed to achieve. The publication features chapters focussing on issues such as sustainable lifestyles, meat and seafood, water, carbon markets, and biodiversity in an effort to explain the importance and place of these topics in the predicted sustainable economy.
