Free Market Missionaries

October 03, 2007

Free Market Missionaries is a lengthy and detailed investigation into the perils of corporate power and free market economics, with a particular focus on how the corporate world has used propaganda to advance their interests. Beder charts the history of the corporate propaganda machine and provides an interesting and original analysis of ‘economic education’ and ‘economic literacy’ initiatives. She argues that such programmes aim and succeed in subverting the ability of current and potential employees to look after their own economic interests. Ultimately though, Beder concludes with the (somewhat familiar) assertion that there has been some kind of clandestine revolution that has succeeded in enslaving the democratic process to corporate interests.
